For a little flavor of what to expect in the Jane Boucher experience...

Take the following Self Test!
From her best-selling book, How to Love the Job You Hate

How does your job match up with your personality?

Take this brief test and find out.

Directions: Circle all the words in all the columns that apply to you most often. If you circle a word in one column that also appears in other columns, circle it as many times as it appears. Be spontaneous. Try not to think too long about your choices. Then fill in the totals under each column. Your highest score is your primary personality; your second highest score, or tie score, indicates your secondary or combination personality.

Is your job you?

Read the following descriptions of each of the personality types. You'll find that no single profile describes you exactly, but you are probably a unique combination of types as indicated by your scores. If you find you are in the kind of work that best matches your personality, any problems you are having may be due to specific situations, policies or people. If you find your job doesn't match your personality, you may want to consider a job, or even a career change.

How to Love the Job You Hate

People-Person

You like people and people naturally like you. You are happiest when you work with people to make their lives better. You probably find that people come to you with their problems and you find it difficult to say no to anyone in need. Your greatest satisfaction comes from people-oriented professions such as teaching, counseling, sales, public relations, acting, the ministry, social work, nursing and health care. Paperwork and organizational procedures tend to frustrate you, as you would rather deal with people. Your need to feel appreciated and a pat on the back often means more to you than high pay. The key for you is to feel you are helping people.

Detail-Person

You may spend your whole life asking "Why?" You are the one who loves to analyze and interpret. You want to understand why things work the way they do. You enjoy research, information analysis, abstract ideas, theory and science. You may be a teacher (especially college), physicist, engineer, doctor, economist, lab technician, or computer systems analyst or designer. You may also choose a less technical profession such as writing, commercial art or architecture, but you will usually choose one that allows you to invent new meanings and methods or improve existing methods and systems. You work best with minimal supervision and get frustrated with bureaucracy and imperfect quality. The key for you is the freedom and time to analyze and perfect things or ideas.

Command-Person

You are the mover, shaker, leader, decision-maker, organizer, manager, entrepreneur, go-getter! You're a bottom line, results-oriented person and you usually do what you set out to accomplish. Obstacles are simply a challenge you enjoy overcoming. Failure isn't even in your vocabulary. Even if a project doesn't work out as you planned, you just move on to the next one. You'll never be called a quitter. However, you may be called aggressive, domineering, or bossy. You prefer being in charge, but you need to be more encouraging and less demanding of your co-workers. You can be a great motivator and inspiring leader. The key for you is to work hard, play hard, and accomplish your goals.

Support-Person

You may sometimes feel invisible or taken for granted, but you prefer behind-the-scenes work. You are the support that holds the organization up. You do the work that requires patience and thoroughness. You like established procedures, regulations and routines. You probably enjoy fields such as computers, bookkeeping/accounting, statistics, engineering/training, and skilled mechanical work. Because of your patient, diplomatic nature, you are probably also good at teaching or counseling. Though you tend to be a reluctant leader, you are usually a good mediator between people and keep things flowing smoothly. The key for you is to be part of an established routine that works and to keep things orderly and predictable.
